Mother's Day
by Kelcie Cornett, Kid City Coordinator
For many, Mother’s Day is a joyful holiday. The day is celebrated with cards, candy, and gifts for mom. For others, Mother’s Day can be hard. For me, my grandmother passed away around Mother’s Day. I was sixteen and completely devastated when that happened. I was angry inside and furious with God. How could He take her away from me? She was God-fearing, patient, and the kindest woman that I knew. She constantly talked about her church and diligently loved the people around her. I had so much life to live, and my grandmother was going to miss being part of it.
Perhaps some of you have had a similar experience. Maybe you have lost a family member around Mother’s Day. Or, you or someone close to you are not able to have children. Perhaps you grew up without a mother, or you have experienced the unfortunate loss of a child of your own. All of these scenarios, and many more, can bring pain and grief on this particular holiday.
I want to encourage you. As followers of Jesus, we have everlasting hope in Him. One day, Jesus will come back and “He will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain." (Revelation 21:4). We will spend eternity in heaven being loved by God. We will also forever worship our Lord and Savior.
What do we do in the meantime? How do we handle the crushing pain that dwells in the depths of our soul? When I feel that I can barely make it from one day to the next, I remember these two words: Be Attentive. The Message version of Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust God from the bottom of your heart, don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He’s the one who will keep you on track.”
At times, it is hard to hear God’s audible voice; however, there are ways that God will show you that He is with you. From getting that unexpected bonus when you had numerous overdue bills, to having a friend encourage you in what you’ve been struggling with, to God showing you His goodness, love, and promises.
He is omnipresent (Colossians 1:17) and wants to make Himself known to us, especially in times of pain (Psalm 34:18). Sometimes, I think we just need to look a little closer to see what the Lord is doing in and around us.
If you’re hurting this Mother’s Day, rest assured in Psalm 27:13; “Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living.”
To everyone else, let me encourage you to ask the Lord to open your eyes. Ask God to help you see who might be hurting during this season. As someone who has experienced loss, I know I would appreciate your prayers and encouragement. As you listen to the voice of the Lord, you never know how the He might use you.
Ultimately, take heart. In Christ, the best is yet to come (Ephesians 3:20).
