Not Thankful?

Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away. For most people that means family, friends, and food, and, usually, at least some consideration of things that we’re thankful for. But what if you’re not thankful? What if you’re in a season of life where you find it difficult to be grateful for anything at all?

Maybe you’ve experienced, or you’re currently experiencing, the loss of a loved one, loss of income, or loss of health? Maybe you’re having a difficult time with your friends or loved ones? Maybe there’s relational or marital strife? We all carry wounds, and wounds tend to be more sensitive around the holidays.

Job was a man in the Old Testament who experienced some devastating losses. He was a faithful follower of God, but that did not alleviate pain and suffering from his life. In fact, Satan specifically targeted Job because of his faith. In a relatively short span of time, Job lost his kids, lost his wealth, and lost his health. His wife told him to curse God, and his friends weren’t very encouraging either. Job had more questions than answers, but he was eventually able to find comfort in the presence and Sovereignty of God. In surrender, Job said, “I know that you can do anything and no plan of yours can be thwarted." (Job 42:2)

When our wounds make it difficult for us to be thankful, like Job, we probably need to shift our perspective. This is not easy to do, but it’s liberating and life giving. We serve and worship a God who is powerful and wise. Most importantly, our God was wounded for us so that we can be healed (Isaiah 53:5). Even when our life circumstances are difficult, followers of Christ have something to be thankful for because we have living a Savior who is present with us.
