In the Secret Place
written by Dorian Watson, M.A.
God’s word has an amazing way of linking itself to itself. It truly is alive and active! Recently, I’ve been meditating on Psalm 91 from the King James, and the idea of the secret place mentioned in verse 1: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
During this time of meditation, I heard Third Day’s Sound of Your Voice. It’s a lovely song, and its lyrics led me to Zephaniah 3:17 ESV, “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” This verse comes at the end of the book of Zephaniah as part of the encouragement for Israel once they return to the Lord from their disobedience. Third Day sings in the first verse of the song:
I ran away from Your love
But You waited for me
Yes, You waited for me
And then I heard Your song
Singing over me
Singing over me.
The song lyrics and Zephaniah 3:17 both brought me back to Psalm 91:1. Even though my choices can lead me into disobedience, God still invites me to dwell in His secret place. In that place, He is in my midst. He is my loving Savior who rejoices over me with gladness. He silences all the noise that distracts me and tempts me to go astray. He loves me and then sings loudly over me.
Where is the secret place? It is in the heart of God. How do you get there? By faith and following the sound of His voice in His word. In the secret place, God will sing over you.
